Player Panel with Rick Dempsey
Written by Mark Pattison, member Bob Davids Chapter

Once at SABR 39, you won’t want to miss the Player Panel featuring longtime Baltimore Orioles catcher (and current Orioles TV color analyst) Rick Dempsey, to be held Friday, July 31, 10:30–11:55 a.m.

Dempsey is one of the Baltimore Orioles’ most beloved players in recent memory. Dempsey’s big-league career began in 1969 with the Minnesota Twins. He also spent four seasons with the New York Yankees before joining the Orioles in 1976 as part of a 10-player trade. The highlight of his time with the Orioles was undoubtedly his MVP performance in the 1983 World Series. Dempsey had the game-winning RBI in Game Two and homered and doubled in the Game Five clincher, hitting .385 overall. He also led AL catchers in fielding in 1981 and 1983 and in assists in 1979. When he left Baltimore at the end of the 1986 season as a free agent, he had caught more games than anyone in franchise history. Dempsey played for the Indians, Dodgers, and Brewers before retiring as an Oriole in 1992.

In addition to his stellar play, Dempsey was known for his sense of humor and “rain delay theater,” in which he would emerge from the dugout in his stockinged feet and pantomime hitting an inside-the-park home run, complete with a slide into home plate on the rain-soaked infield tarp. Sometimes he would do this while wearing a pair of underpants over his uniform, a not-so-subtle teasing of teammate Jim Palmer’s famous Jockey underwear ads. Dempsey outdid himself during a 1977 rain delay at Fenway Park, when he did his standard pantomime routine with towels stuffed in his shirt to evoke Babe Ruth’s famous belly and then stood on the dugout and led the crowd in an impromptu rendition of “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head.”

Dempsey has remained part of the Orioles organization in one way or another since retiring as a player. He served as a coach (primarily first base) in the early 2000s and, beginning in 2007, became the studio analyst for “O’s Xtra” on MASN, the cable channel that carries Orioles games.

Rick Dempsey will be interviewed by SABR member George Michael. Bob Davids Chapter members know Michael well for his keen interest in identifying the participants – players and umpires alike – in sliding photos. Others may recognize him as the longtime sports anchor for WRC, Channel 4 in Washington, and his hosting of the “George Michael Sports Machine” Sunday night sports roundup program.

Survey: Washington Baseball Milestones
Written by Mark Pattison, member Bob Davids Chapter
Wednesday, 17 June 2009 08:00

SABR members can now vote for their most important of baseball milestones featuring Washington’s major-league franchises and the many Negro League and minor league teams to have played in the region of the Bob Davids Chapter, which takes in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and parts of Pennsylvania. You’ll notice that we’ve got 39 candidates: 38 choices suggested by Bob Davids Chapter members, with the 39th a write-in possibility for you (there are no numbers, but trust us – we counted and recounted, shades of Bush vs. Gore!). Click HERE to vote for your Top Ten. Your votes and those of other SABR members will be tallied – but you must vote by the 11:59 p.m. ET June 29 – which, coincidentally, happens to be the last day you can obtain the SABR discount at the J.W. Marriott in downtown Washington, our official convention hotel. Don’t delay. Do it today!

The survey is now closed - results coming soon!

We’d like to do a similar list for Baltimore-area baseball milestones. If you have any to suggest, send them, along with month/date/year, to Mark Pattison at pattison_mark@hotmail.com.

Tour Guides

We've been mentioning some of the great sights to see when you're not taking in the convention -- or things for your family to enjoy while you're eating, sleeping and breathing baseball. Well, the Bob Davids chapter is blessed some very qualified tour guides. They have offered their services to those attending SABR 39. Please contact them directly to arrange personal or group tours. Their rates are very reasonable and they know the area and its history like few other people. Several chapter members (longtime residents of the area) have taken a sample walking tour and learned fascinating things about the nation’s capital only a few steps from the front door of the JW Marriott hotel. Click "Read more" to learn about the guides.

Baltimore's Monuments

Baltimore is known as the Monumental City. Our Washington Monument was completed in 1829,  55 years before the more-famous one in Washington, D.C., and you can walk all the way to the top, a mere 228 steps. President John Quincy Adams, bestowed the nickname during an 1827 visit, when he saw the recently completed Battle Monument (dedicated to the defenders who had died in the Battle of Baltimore in 1814, it graces the city flag and seal), the rising Washington Monument and a memorial at the battleground of North Point (9 miles from the city).

Memorial Stadium, the Orioles' home before Camden Yards opened in 1992, was dedicated to the memory of those who gave their lives in the two world wars, and the flag that often flew during Orioles games bore the 15 stars and stripes of the banner that flew over Fort McHenry.

There are sports tributes, too, not quite so monumental. The Oriole Advocates, an organization dedicated to promoting baseball at all levels, started the Orioles Hall of Fame in 1977. Plaques of the honorees line a brick wall along the Eutaw Street walkway at Camden Yards. There are also plaques honoring the members of the Maryland State Athletic Hall of Fame. The nearby museum Sports Legends at Camden Yards has exhibits on both halls of fame. Also in the  Eutaw Street area are a statue of Baltimore-born Babe Ruth and sculpted aluminum numbers, tributes to the Orioles whose numbers have been retired (4-Earl Weaver, 5-Brooks Robinson, 8-Cal Ripken Jr., 20-Frank Robinson, 22-Jim Palmer, 33-Eddie Murray).
