SABR members can now vote for their most important of baseball milestones featuring Baltimore's major and minor league teams. You’ll notice that we’ve got 39 candidates: 38 choices suggested by Bob Davids Chapter members, with the 39th a write-in possibility for you (there are no numbers, but trust us – we counted and recounted, shades of Bush vs. Gore!). Click HERE to vote for your Top Ten. Your votes and those of other SABR members will be tallied – but you must vote by the 11:59 p.m. ET July 23. Don’t delay. Do it today!

Washington's Baseball Milestones: Results
Written by Mark Pattison, member Bob Davids Chapter
Thursday, 02 July 2009 12:20

The voting period has concluded and, unlike the Senate race in Minnesota, we have the results two days after the polling has closed. Here are the results of SABR members’ voting of Washington major league and Bob Davids (Baltimore-Washington) Chapter regional minor league baseball milestones.

  • 1. October 10, 1924: Senators win World Series at Griffith Stadium.
  • 2. April 14, 2005: Major league baseball returns to D.C. in the form of the Washington Nationals, the transplanted Montreal Expos.
  • 3 (tie). 1910: President Taft starts the tradition of presidents throwing out the first pitch at a game.
  • 3 (tie). 1913: Walter Johnson goes 36-7 with a 1.12 ERA.
  • 3 (tie) April 17, 1953: Mickey Mantle’s 565-foot homer of Chuck Stobbs at Griffith Stadium, a blast which brings “tape measure” into the lexicon.
  • 3 (tie) 1960, 1971: The departure, to Minnesota and Texas, respectively, of the two Senators franchises
  • 7 (tie) 1968: The Senators’ Frank Howard –- a featured panelist at SABR 39 -- hits 10 homers in 20 at-bats over six games.
  • 7 (tie) July 19, 1982: 75-year-old Luke Appling hits a homer off Warren Spahn in the Cracker Jack Old-Timers game at RFK Stadium.
  • 7 (tie). March 30, 2008: Nationals Park opens in Washington, with Ryan Zimmermann hitting the game-winning homer.
  • 10. April 7, 1969: Ted Williams’ managerial for the Senators vs. the Yankees at RFK Stadium.

Trailing close behind was the second Senators franchise’s last home game September 30, 1971, in which rioting fans, disgusted at getting the (Bob) Short End of the Stick, turned a Senators lead with two outs in the ninth inning against the Yankees, into a famous/infamous forfeit.

We are still accepting your nominations for a similar poll on Baltimore baseball milestones. Submit date (exact where possible) and nature of milestone. We’ll offer 38 plus a write-in line for 39th in keeping with SABR 39. Contact me off-list at pattison_mark@hotmail.com to make your nominations. We expect to get the poll linked from the convention’s Web site in the middle of the month.
