Commissioner Selig makes no bones of his desire to sell baseball internationally. And when it comes to foreign markets, they don’t come much richer than China. Will baseball globalization succeed there? And if it does, will it be as a consumer of the product or a supplier of talent (or both)? Since 2002, we’ve seen five Taiwanese players in MLB, but none yet from the mainland (son-of-a-missionary Harry Kingman, who played four games for the 1914 Yankees, doesn’t count). Hutzler’s combination of interests – public policy, Chinese culture, varsity baseball – promises an insightful presentation.
