We fans are well aware of the sounds of the ballpark – the public address announcer, the between-batters and between-innings music, the advertisements, the video board. All of those, even the PA man, were added to the game experience by management, whether to enhance revenues, work up fan enthusiasm, or divert attention from some not-so-nice sounds on the field. As a student of media, sound forms, and the meaning thereof, Kupfer may be the ideal person to direct our thoughts about the sounds of the game in directions we hadn’t previously considered. Alex Kupfer (alexkupfer@gmail.com) is a PhD student in the Department of Cinema Studies at New York University. He is interested in how media forms, especially movies, radio, and other sound technology, impacted baseball.
